The Elusive Motivation: Why It’s Hard to Start and How to Build Momentum

16/03/2026 by admin Leave a Comment

You know those times when you just can’t be bothered. You just can’t bring yourself to do something you know would be good for you.

Many people experience this when thinking about exercise or trying to lose weight.

It’s a very common part of the human experience.

Listen to Your Feelings

Sometimes that lack of motivation is worth listening to. It may be signalling that the action you’re considering actually moves you further away from something that matters more to you.

For example, imagine you want to spend more quality time with your partner. If going to the gym alone takes you away from that value, the lack of motivation may start to make more sense.

But motivation can also feel elusive for another reason.

Why Motivation Feels So Hard in the Modern World

We live in a world built around instant gratification.

Constant distractions, social comparisons, and quick rewards can leave us feeling drained before we even start something meaningful. When a task requires effort, patience, or endurance, it can feel easier to avoid it entirely.

Our “get up and go” sometimes feels like it has simply got up and gone.

Start With the Smallest Possible Step

So if you want change, the real question becomes:

What is the smallest step you can take?

Action creates momentum.

Once you begin, you’ve already taken the hardest step. Small actions repeated consistently begin to form habits that move you closer to your larger goals.

As you continue making progress, your brain releases dopamine – the reward chemical that reinforces effort and progress.

The key word is continue.

Think of our ancestors hunting for food. Success wasn’t guaranteed, but the brain rewarded persistence and effort so they would keep going.

Motivation often grows after we begin, not before.

Why Motivation Gets Hijacked

Today, many of our reward systems are hijacked by instant dopamine hits – junk food, social media, television, or endless scrolling.

These provide immediate rewards with almost no effort. They can feel satisfying in the moment, but they rarely create the deeper sense of progress or wellbeing that comes from meaningful action.

Sustainable Change Comes From Commitment

Real change usually comes from lifestyle adjustments rather than quick fixes.

It starts with a decision.
That decision is followed by action.

And over time, enough consistent action becomes commitment.

There will always be bumps and potholes along the road. That’s part of the process.

But you are more resilient and capable than you may realise.
